I carefully grabbed Dawn's ankle, gently tugging her back once so that I could shoot forward and wrap my arms around her torso. I pulled us up to the surface, where I started laughing. "Gotcha," I whispered in her ear.

When I opened it, my mouth dropped. His messy brown hair was hidden under a backwards baseball cap and his stubble was starting to grow longer into a beard. The green eyes he had passed onto Bree were sparkling with mischief, or something far worse. "Hey, babe." "How did you find me?" I whispered, almost inaudible. He ignored me, still assessing me with those eyes. "I heard we have a kid." "How did you find me?" I repeated, my voice more demanding. Eric shrugged. "Wasn't hard. Now, where's this kid?" "Her name is Bree," I growled. "And you can't see her."

"Who's that?" Eric asked, smirking, but his eyes grew hard, almost angry.
"Nobody," I snapped. "Go away!"
"No. We can do this the easy way, or the hard way. Where's this Bree?"
"Rayne!" I called, though my voice quivered. "Can you go get Bree?" Which was code for, Please make sure Bree is okay and keep her safe with you.

I watched him for a moment, and forgetting my pain, I hurried to Bree's room, quickly scooping her into my arms and pulling her face against my chest.
"Momma, what's going on?" Bree whispered.
"Nothing, baby," I told her, fast-walking into the living room. "Rayne..." I murmured, putting my hand on his shoulder. "Please?" I didn't want him to do anything drastic.
Eric watched us for a minute. "I'm just gonna come in," Eric said, smirking again as he took one step over the threshold.

Shaking his head and eyes flaring, Eric yelled, "She's my kid too! If I goddamn want to see her, I will!"
