The mail arrives right on time. You go through it, flipping through the bills and ads. One thing catches your eye. It’s from a new, expensive apartment building called “Sunset Towers.” Apparently, you were one of the selected people to come live there! That’s odd, you think. I didn’t enter a contest. But this was such a big opportunity, you didn’t think too much about it. You packed up all you got and moved into your new apartment. The first few weeks were great.. Until something tragic happened.
The owner of Sunset Towers, Mr. Samuel Westing, was found dead on Halloween. Next thing you know, you are inside the Westing Mansion, listening to Mr. Westing’s lawyer read the will. What does this have to do with me? You think, glancing around the room at the other people, who also live in Sunset Towers.
Finally, Mr. Pom, the lawyer, says something interesting. “So why does this involve you?” he says, looking around the room. Mr. Pom continues reading from the will, “My life was taken. It was taken by one of you, sitting here in this room.” You looked up, shocked, staring around at everyone else, who had the same face. “Yes, it was one of you, and unless someone comes out front and says who it was, there’s a bit of a game involved.” Mr. Pom pauses and looks up. Everyone is glaring at each other, but no one says anything. “Okay then,” Mr. Pom continues, “First, you will be paired up with another person in this room.“ Mr. Pom then goes to read off the pairs, and you go to sit with your partner. “Each one of you will be handed an envelope with clues in it. These clues will lead you to the my murderer, but beware. No one can be trusted, not even your partner.”
Mr. Pom hands each of us an envelope. He goes back to the will. “Now I request that you don’t open the envelope until after this meeting. Now, to continue. Why should you play this game, you are wondering? First, every one who plays gets $10,000. The first pair to figure out my murderer, the winner, will inherit my fortune- $200,000,000.” There was a gasp in the room. “Every week, you will have more than one meetings with Mr. Pom, regarding the game. Before you go, I just want you to know what you are getting into. No one can be trusted. You must watch your back at all times. We wouldn’t want the same thing that happened to me happening to you, would you? Play your cards right and you will win. Welcome to the Westing Game.”
