Hello everybody
I wrote this just now for Boolprop and I wanted to share it with you all as well
October 31st. 8:24 pm. And there I was, waiting for the start of just another evening rendez-vous with my girlfriend, Amy, after a busy day for the pair of us. I sat in our favourite coffee shop on that chilly Halloween, watching the torrential rain and lightening that completed the eerie scene spread out before me. The street-lit shopping centre had been invaded by all manner of spookily dressed youths on the hunt for sweets that evening, and they all gave it their best shot to be menacing as possible, despite their obvious juvenile innocence. I smiled at the thought, but my smile faded as I rechecked my watch and realised Amy was well over twenty minutes late. This was very much out of character for her, she was always on time - in fact, she was usually twenty minutes early. I was starting to feel a sense of growing unease that wasn't at all welcome. I rechecked my phone and - upon seeing no messages waiting on my screen - heaved myself to my feet, donned my overcoat and made my way out into the open air.
The cool evening breeze made me shiver slightly; I pulled my coat tighter around myself as I headed down Amy's usual route to the coffee shop. The unease was starting to grow within me until it felt almost like a solid knot in my stomach. Away from the shouts and catcalls of the children playing at being spooky it was much quieter, and darker too and I could hear my own footsteps reverberating around the street. With very step I took, my tension grew because I knew it was becoming more and more likely Amy had fallen into serious trouble which I dared not imagine. When my phone rang a few minutes later I first nearly jumped out of my skin in surprise - my quirky and upbeat ringtone piercing the silence like a knife - and then felt a surge of relief when I saw the Caller ID - Amy had rung at last. I put the phone to my ear and before I could utter my 'Hello' I was interrupted by desperate sobbing that could only be Amy's.
"Please don't hurt me. Just take my handbag, my phone, everything, just don't hit me any more" was all I could make out between gasping sobs and - spine chillingly - drunken laughter. I broke into a run and tore up the street in an effort to find Amy before any serious damage could be done. I finally saw the long evening shadows peering from round a side-street, depicting a desperate struggle of two large men and my beautiful slender girlfriend. Adrenaline blocked out all fear as I ran straight round that corner and belted the nearest full in the face. I have never been an intimidating figure, preferring to use my brains and not my brawn to solve problems, but the sight of me that dark Halloween evening must have filled the two drunk muggers with fear as they staggered backwards and slouched away up the alley, carrying Amy's handbag and jeering. I could have chased them, but I didn't - even now I wonder whether I could have taught them a lesson and recovered Amy's possessions if only I had, but there was very little point chasing two huge angry men on my own. I turned my attention to Amy.
She lay on the floor, shuddering and gasping, badly beaten with scratches and newly forming bruises all over her lovely face. The tears ran down her cheeks as she lay crumpled in the pavement. As I punched in the number for an Ambulance, I knew just then that - despite all the efforts of the children playing at being terrifying on the last day of October - the most scary people were with us all around the year, preying on innocent people for money...sometimes for sport. As I held my poor, injured Amy close as the sirens grew louder, I knew that Amy and I had felt true fear on Halloween that night; fear I sincerely hope neither of us will even have to face up to again.
Hope you enjoyed
