I’m not the type of person to demand special treatment, and I don’t want special treatment either, but… the teachers at my school always think they know best, but they threaten my wellbeing on a daily basis. 2 medical bracelets and a necklace, and they still don’t understand that I’m a diabetic. I’ve explained it countless of times that I do have special needs and they need to modify some rules to suit my lifestyle. But is that enough? No, they don’t get it. They don’t get that I need to have my bag with me at all times,they don’t understand that I need to eat in class at times and they don’t get that I need to take my insulin at the same time each day. Sorry, but I can’t keep my school bag with a thousand of others under the library, when we’re in the hall. If I have a hypoglycaemic attack suddenly, what are you going to do? Are you going to even notice that I’m unconcious, when I’m in a crowd of around a thousand other students? I don’t want to casually carry sharps around with me, which is why I keep it in my bag. I must have my bag with me. Sorry, but if I have a hypo, it’s not something I can just “walk off”. I need to have food if I get sick, and to be honest, would a handful of jellybeans disturb the class that much? Honestly? Forcing me to leave the class makes me feel like I don’t even belong, and I’d prefer to just do what I have to do in peace. You can’t just take my food off of me either, that’s an endangerment to my health. And no, Miss, I can’t just skip an injection at your fancy. You’re not even allowed to ask that! It’s not good management. I’m sick of getting harassed every time a complication arises. If they want my respect, I expect the same - at the end of the day, I don’t want to draw attention to myself, I don’t want to be known as the “diabetic girl” - but that’s how I get treated, because they try to stop me from doing what I have to do to keep me healthy. That’s not fair, and it makes me feel terrible. I know that sometimes, it’s not convienient, but I can’t help it. It’s an ongoing issue which I have to deal with every single day of my life, it’s not like I can come to school in the morning suddenly cured. The teachers say they know everything about the illness, when they know nothing, and they need to be educated on it if they’re going to educate me. I am not going to put my life in danger, for them.  /rant |
